While Sound & Vision may be a large company, all designs are created by a head designer plus two interns. Thijs Horseling serves as the head designer. This semester I worked as one of the interns. Though the team is quite small, this arrangement provides us with many assignments that are actually implemented in real-world applications.
The workload at Sound & Vision fluctuates considerably. For instance, February was extremely busy with My First Smartphone Festival while May was relatively quieter. Thijs has implemented a well-designed planning system with management protocols. This includes a Gmail-based system that tracks which assignments haven’t been started yet, which are in progress plus who is working on them. Assignments are frequently discussed together to identify potential improvements. Feedback from the client is always requested before finalizing or ordering any materials.
The magazine was developed collaboratively by a team of six students, with each member designing individual articles before collectively refining every page through group discussion and feedback. The client maintained close involvement throughout the weekly process, providing hands-on guidance and clear direction about expectations and deliverables. This collaborative approach offered valuable insight into the client’s vision, though the frequent input required careful time management to maintain project momentum.
Final production included close collaboration with the client on print editing details—adding barcodes, making text adjustments, and gaining practical experience in professional print preparation. Meeting demanding deadlines required the team to invest extra hours, with project management and progress oversight ensuring each article was completed punctually. The complete magazine represents a collective effort to honor Straatnieuws’s three decades of community service while establishing their presence in a new editorial format.
